The above title is the name of a workshop that Morah Sharona and I attended last Friday. One of the main things I learned there is that we are doing so much that is appropriate here at GHA.
An important factor for assuring future reading comprehension is understanding different types of memory. One type of memory is episodic memory. It is "memory for subjective experiences throughout time." You best remember things that have emotional attachment for you. Play facilitates episodic memory because it's fun.
Children demonstrate what is important to them through their play and also through their drawing. Drawing for children is a form of narrative.
This morning in our class, there were a few examples of this: Heather put on a white lace dress from the dress up box and a little later, she and Matthew were busily drawing pictures at the writing area. When asked what they were doing, they informed me that they were making wedding pictures.
Juniper, Landon and Asher, who have older siblings, were doing "homework" at the art area. They were very focused and serious about this. Juniper proudly showed off her completed "assignment".
Noam wrote his name on a paper and drew a box with columns in it underneath. This was the sticker chart he has at home.
All of these children were expressing memories of things that they have an attachment to.
