How do you get to be a...? Continued

Gan A and B have been visited by three parent experts since the last post about this project.

Hugh Mainzer, a veterinarian and U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Chief Veterinary Officer, explained to both classes how he had to go to a special school to learn to be an animal doctor. He also told some funny and interesting stories about learning to become a vet.

The week following his visit, the students each drew a picture about something they remember from Dr. Mainzer's presentation. Tia remembered how the horses he treated were so big they needed an examining table as big as our Morning Meeting carpet!

Julie Kaminsky, a coordinator for Jewish Healthcare International, explained to Gan Bet how she first started helping others by volunteering with the Peace Corps and then she worked for the Peace Corps. Now she helps doctors find places around the world to volunteer their time teaching other doctors and healing patients.

Rashelle Berry, a pediatric nutritionist, spoke with the students in Gan Alef about how she needed to go to preschool, elementary school, middle school, high school, college, graduate school, complete an internship, and take a big test to be able to work at her job. She works with children teaching them how to eat and how to choose what foods to eat to make their bodies grow.

The students prepare ahead of time for each visitor by first discussing a little bit about what the visitor does for work, and then they think of something they want to know about their visitor's work.

Gan Alef and Bet will send representatives from each class to visit the other and share what they learned after a visitor has come to school.

Due to an overwhelming response from parent experts, we are working to schedule all who wish to come and share with our students.
